The Karolinska Institutet announces Research Grants for Young Investigators
*******************************************************
The Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the Stockholm County Council (SLL) are initiating a series of long-range thematic programs where basic and clinical research are integrated in an effort to synergize translational research. These programs will provide excellent possibilities for junior investigators to build strong, innovative and strategic research environments.
Within the framework of the new Cardiovascular Program, we are announcing grants for Young Investigators who are currently, or in the process of becoming, an independent group leader. The grants will be in the amount of SEK 500,000-1,000,000 per year for 4 years and will be distributed to the recipient as a block grant. These grants are designed to be extremely flexible and can be used by the selected candidates for equipment and supplies, to finance their own position, and/or for salary to recruit staff. Proposed projects should fall within the scope of research areas that are prioritized within the Cardiovascular Program. The successful applicants will be expected to base their research activities at one of the departments belonging to Karolinska Institutet.
The Cardiovascular Program is intended to operate “from bedside to bench and back”, ensuring that clinically relevant problems are addressed and that novel mechanistic insights are rapidly translated into innovative preventive, diagnostic & therapeutic approaches and implemented in clinical care.
Focus is being placed on two key questions of particular clinical relevance:
(i) How can efficient prevention of plaque rupture/acute coronary syndrome be achieved?
(ii) How can the function of the ischemic myocardium be preserved & heart failure prevented?
To address these questions, new concepts will be developed for the molecular pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis & therapy of four central processes in cardiovascular medicine - atherosclerosis, plaque rupture, myocardial ischaemia including endogenous repair processes involving angiogenesis, and aneurysm formation. The long-term aims include the discovery of new therapy targets, providing novel biomarkers for diagnostic & prognostic use, and conducting human proof-of-principle studies of novel strategies for prevention and treatment. Further information on the program can be found on the homepage (http://www.cardiovascular.se/).
The applicant is expected to be at one of the following levels:
- Senior post-doctoral fellow with the ambition to start an independent research group;
- Assistant professor (forskarassistent) or similar with an independent research program.
The application should consist of a research plan (maximum 8 pages), the applicants CV (maximum 2 pages), a list of scientific publications, as well as copies of not yet published manuscripts (maximum 2).
Awards will be made by the Cardiovascular Program’s steering committee following external evaluation of the application. Short-listed candidates will be brought to the Karolinska Institutet for interviews and to present their work to the steering committee.
Questions regarding this announcement and the Cardiovascular Program should be directed to the head of the steering group, Professor Anders Hamsten (phone: +46-8-51773222; e-mail: anders.hamsten@ki.se).
Application, marked with reference number 2624/2010, should be submitted by
June 7th 2010 to rekrytering@meds.ki.se.
